But is this *actually* true?  I'm considering buying an LS4000 scanner and 
I'm loathe to create a new partition on my box just for Windows.

But that seems to be the only way to run the scanner.  That, or buy a mac.  
That's Linux's main failing right now -- software support from vendors. I 
seriously doubt that Nikon gave any thought to Linux/*BSD support because the 
user base is so small.
