i think the gist of it is that let's say you develop zone VIII as per
ansel adams to about 1.25 d above film base+fog.  that might put
zone X at 1.55 over film base+fog.  if film base+fog is as high as 0.30D,
then your maximum "meaningful" density would be 1.85D.  therefore a scanner
capable of scanning in that (limited) range would theoretically get the
range of tones your print would get.
