Marc,
Whether you realise it or not, you have just answered
your own arguements.
While the Versailles treaty had been dead for a long
time, it is highly likely that some of the effects lingered
on in the minds of the older generation. Or perhaps it was
somehow related to the military occupation authorities
approval for permits.
So just as a microscope factory could be "an Optical
Institute", a very small scale glass factory could also be
a "Laboratory".
And in fact, this was not too far removed ( 15 years? )
from the period when a military armored vehicle was an
"agricultural tractor". People still play with the
meanings of words....
So we have a "Laboratory" which was in fact producing
production lots of special optical glass. And if in fact
it fulfilled both functions, all the better for us.
