Really?  If I get rid of any more midtones, it's going to be nothing *but*
shadows and highlights.  Wonder if it's a difference of monitor settings.

I ran a histogram on the image, and here's what I see:

Not what I'd call that many midtones.  Especially contrasted with the
histogram for my main image:
