Dennis,

Of course there are many ways one "could" do it, but my main point was
cheapo units like this don't have FLASH, they use mask programmed PROMs (or
even mask programmed CPUs), which can not be updated electronically, they
must be removed (by unsoldering them from the PCB) in order to replace them.
