Yes it does work.  This is how I manage the rangefinder
flare from the M6hm.  There was a Leica accessory made for
the screw mounts that as I recall was red and increased the
contrast.  I use snips from polycontrast filters that I had
to cut down.

Don't forget that you can sometimes get great answers from
#leica on newnet IRC.
