Hi Frank, the reason you use a flash especially with birds is to create a
highlight in the eye and bring out detail in the feathers.  It lets you
shoot from the dark side or any side and come up with good photo's.

The page demonstrates why you would want to use such a thing.

I believe the greater Tiffen/Saunders group sells something similar.
