Come on, brother Colen. And the game where someone throws two pieces of
horsehide wrapped around a cork center and another someone tries to hit it
with a wooden stick; and a very hard rubber disk pursued by grownups - and
children - on skates, on ice and with curved sticks, who try to put it into a
net; and a large round ball that people try to put into a net ten feet high
while others try to stop it; and people mounted on horses who pursue another
hard ball with mallets on the end of a long flexible stick to strike it
between two white posts.

It's human competition and as social conduct it ain't a bad substitute for
armed conflict.

Mind you, my response is no condonation of the brutish behavior of many
soccer (football) fans around the world. That is outrageous and should be
dealt with as harshly as necessary to stop it (well, I suppose I would stop
short of capital punishment!!).

But don't condemn sports or games nor the folks who attach national pride and
importance to the outcomes.

BTW, ever watch a Formula One Grand Prix race? While Mika Hakkinen - two-time
world champion - was racing, fans frantically waved Finnish flags at each of
his races; and Scottish flags (!!) for David Coultard and German flags for
Michael Schumacher etcet.

Best regards,
