David,
If you come over to the Canyon from Las Vegas, go to the North Rim.  The south rim is another half
days drive around (The place is big!).  Try to plan so that you can be there for sunrise or sunset
when the light is the most dramatic and the colors most intense. Wide angle lenses are good, but
short teles get nice detail shots.  You can't get bad pictures with either.  Side trips on the way
to/from Vegas to Zion National Park can be photographically rewarding ,too.
