slightly off-topic,

but how long do you find it takes to make a "contact" scan (6 images)
and then a pre-scan (low-res scan for cropping and other manipulations)?

i timed my old minolta dimage multi on my old mac and each step takes about
45 seconds. frankly, i was surprised because it felt a lot more like
45 minutes! (ok, more like 1.5 minutes) too long, in any case. feelings
of extreme violence overwhelm me if any computer takes more than 30 seconds
to do anything.
