I thought documentary (aka traditional ansel adams or leica photography) 
was/is very different from the out-of-focus shots of gratuitous fat asses.  
As a matter of fact it seems to me that this type of photography is a 
reaction to as you say the "old farts," and thus the "old farts," as you call 
it would probably loath out of focus arty shots as much as they hate William 
Mortensen and pictorialism.
