b.d. suggested documentary photographers support their work with commercial
shooting:

michael b. replied:

popular "photojournalist style" like the rest of us.

to which i'll toss in my .02:

mary ellen mark, a better photographer than i, and certianly one with
excellent doccumentary credentials does celeberty portraits to support her
doccumentary work (which brings her little or no money although a
considerable amount of personal satisfaction). see her books "streetwise" on
teen hookers in seattle and "falkland road" about adult hookers in india,
and her fantastic doccumentary work with people like the Damm family (two
adults, two kids, two dogs, all living in a car). and for the other side of
her work, check out "portraits". or just get the big 25 year retrospective.
which is well worth it.
