The thing I found so fascinating about Lake Wobegon Days was that, in
addition to being beautifully written, it provided a real feel for Keillor
and for the fact that, despite having mythologized Minnesota prairie life,
he obviously hated growing up in that environment. A Prairie Home Companion
is, in some ways, a huge secret joke - a weekly flood of nostalgia for
something it's creator scorns.

He was on the television here this morning (UK). I tried reading his books
but you lose a lot by not hearing him read them out loud. He read a lovely
piece once about different people jumping over a pool of water from a broken
water main in the street and I've been trying to find an opportunity to
photograph something similar for years.

Tom:

No he wasn't posing for the photo, he was standing outside of a classroom
waiting to be introduced prior to speaking. There was no one outside there
except he and I, and rather than crowd him I tried to hang back a bit. He's
very interesting. You don't notice in the photo, as it is Black and White,
but he has these RED socks on that I hear he wears all the time.
