Thanks, and thank-you, too, to the others who replied.

My main question is how I go about setting depth of field without a 
fully manual setting. I'm also confused about 'white balance', and 
the concept of digital zoom as opposed to optical zoom (an innovation 
I've only just become used to -- I'm more accustomed to juggling -- 
literally -- with two or three screw lenses and their various caps 
and filters).

Any help, at whatever depth of technicality, will be much appreciated.
