The song "Loch Lomond" indeed made reference to taking the high road,
"Ye'll take the high road, and I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland before ye."

I was told that "low road" is the underground, otherwordly road taken
by those who die away from home to reach from their homeland.
Apparently the sond was written about the Jacobite rebellion led
by Bonnie Prince Charlie in the mid 18th century. The song
was about 2 captured Jacobites, one condemned to death, the
other sent back to Scotland. The lyrics of the song was in the words
of the condemned man.
