Subject: RE: [Leica] OT Hasselblad H1

There was an article in the daily newspaper here in Göteborg (Gothenburg)
where Hasselblads are made.

The cost for development were shared with Fuji and probably even Minolta.
Fuji is providing the lenses, Minolta the autofocus. Zeiss lenses can be
used with an adapter.

The digital back will come from either Kodak or Phase One (Denmark).
Hasselblads own development work in digital technology was put on ice when
the Swiss bought the company in 1996. The verdict was (then) that digital
was for the amateurs, but on the pro-market it wouldn't be growing that
much. Live and learn.

The market for medium-format is 60,000 to 80,000 units a year (globally).
Hasselblad has 20-25% of this market and is aiming for 30%.

Price: around 55,000 SEK (let's say 9.3 crowns to the USD or
there-abouts).

2/3 of the camera will be provided by external suppliers. The bodies and
the prisms will be made in Gothenburg. All assembly will be done here in
Gothenburg.

It's a small company: about 300 employees with 200 of them here in Sweden.
I suspect that Leica needs about the same dimensions to remain financially
viable.

All the best, Daniel
