Dave,

thanks for your comments.  I very rarely post colour shots.  Firstly because
it is only in the last month or so that I have had a scanner capable of
scanning trannies, and secondly because of my inexperience with scanning and
in particular,photoshop.  Getting acceptably sharp scans of 35mm slides has
been very difficult, but I feel that I am making  progress.
It isn't your monitor - M Pons was stood under a bright red parasol in the
midday sun, hence the color cast (which I hadn't taken much notice of until
it was pointed out to me).
Point taken about the chap in the background.  As far as DOF was concerned,
it was VERY bright that day and working with an EI100 film didn't give me
much option - I guess the smallest aperture that I could have used would
have been f5.6 at 1/1000 - with a 35mm lens, this would have still  given me
quite a bit of DOF.
The hints and tips that this image have generated have been invaluable and I
will be giving them all a go.
