Randy,

The Leica reflex cameras are designed so that the shutter does not open
until the lens stops down all the way. The mechanism in the body mount
that stops down the lens may be sticky and need cleaning.

To check this stop down mechanism, try the depth of field preview lever and
make sure the lens aperture opens and closes smoothly.

Some R4 with serial numbers under 1,600,000 had unreliable electronics. I
have never seen it first hand, but have been told the LEDS in the finder
tend to be erratic. Your best bet may just be to return the camera to the
person you bought it from. The seller may also offer to help pay for the
repair.

Regards,

Robert
