OK you guys, I process about 5000 digital images a week from nikon D1X,
D100, Fuji S2 and Kodak 760. Our lab did a side by side comparison with a
Nikon D1x(nef), Nikon with Provia 100F (same lens 80-200 afs)and a hassy.
Same subject and we tried to match the focal lengths the best we could.
Scanned Film to 100M with a Kodak HR500. We made prints (Lightjet) of each
at 40X60. The digital file used nikon capture and sharpcontrol.
Results: The 35 film resolved better than the digital, but the grain showed,
so most of the graphic specialists assembled for this 'blind test ' picked
the digital over the 35. Most comments revolved around the fact that
although you could see more detail, the lack of grain in the digital made a
much more pleasing picture. The hassy image was the favorite but most
reported that the digital came close. We showed our test to about 20 graphic
pros and agency pros.
That being said I love shooting my M's with Provia, and would happily live
out the rest of my days doing so. Digital is a pain in the A.., my digital
pack weighs about 65 lbs, going on location involves battery chargers, cell
phone chargers (to transmit the images), Laptops, back up hard drives, CCD
cleaning kits. Usually working 3 hours after the assignment to
download, convert, caption and file the images. The cameras are heavy, the
lenses are heavy, dig camera battery-heavy, not to mention having to carry
back up cords for everything (going to screw up a $10000 assignment because
of a $10 firewire cord?).
Digital today looks really good, it's really fast and if you know what
you're doing can produce great results...but it's a logistical pain in the
a.. and it ain't fun.
