well, i develop for 12 minutes in XTOL (1+3, distilled water, 100ml per
8x10 area rule) which yields a rich negative. the speed of 800 was
based on the zone I test: the speed at which a zone I exposure was 0.10 D
over film base plus fog. development seeks to make zone VIII exposure
about 1.25D over FB+F. the practical guide: the exposure such that you can
make a nice contact sheet on grade 2 paper with film base at dmax.
