I'm surprised that this important instructional material was left out of my Leica manual. Your method works nicely for the M6ttl (where the larger shutter speed ring extends beyond the body) and all un-metered m-series cameras (where you look at the shutter speed ring instead of through the lens as you set the shutter). There's a new, improved, first step for metered M6's without the larger shutter speed ring. It permits a more relaxed grip with the camera at eye level (and prevents your fingers from knocking off your Tilley hat as you adjust the shutter speed): Rest the inside edge of the fleshy part at the end of the finger on the top front of the shutter speed dial. (The unsupported outside edge of the finger will still touch the knurled upper edge of the dial). This new improved first step will also work with old non-metered M-series cameras. It's just as effective as the former first step (and doesn't hurt as much when you grab the meter notch).
