Parts availability is also a question of the supplier's philosophy. 
One of my motorbikes is a 29 year old BMW. Most parts in stock 
locally, _all_ other parts can be ordered for next day delivery from 
their central warehouse. But then BMW boxer model changes are about 
as frequent as changes to the  Leica M series. Try to get parts for a 
Japanese bike discontinued only five years ago....

When I was a young man, I worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Co. 
They would supply all spares for all sewing machines made by them - 
ever. Hundred years ago? Yes! Price?
