When using my IIIa, I often use the Sunny 16 rule, especillay if shooting color neg which is more forgiving of exposure error. Occasionaly I will use a small handheld meter to get a baseline reading, and then just point and shoot, adjusting for the type of shot I am making, (ie shutter speed for movement or aperture for DOF) but not changing much for the same light.
On my M4-2 I use a MR-4 meter, but even then it is often "Measure once, shoot many"
