Yes, Michiel is right.  I actually have a bunch of old selenium meters in
my collection in great working condition.  I keep them in dark.  They are
all 40 or more years old.

You are right, if it dies, it is dead. Only way to cure is to replace the
cell.
Afaik it dies because of the light. So, when you are not using it, make
sure 
the cell is shaded from light.
