They snap on, if you fall on top of your M6 they can break off :-( Once one
has broken off you can see the two holes that they snap into. As you can
probably guess this happened to me after slipping on ice (it was only
afterwards that I thought about what the extended Rapidwinder could have
done to me :-)

The one I broke off was on the right hand side and the exposed holes caused
occasional light leaks until I taped over them - I emailed Leica about
getting a replacement but never had a reply.

Does anyone know how the black plastic strap protectors are attached to the
top plate of M cameras?  Are they bonded on, or do they snap into recesses.
