I would guess - and I know this is true in my case - that the only thing keeping allot of Nikon users from jumping to Canon is their current investment in Nikon glass. So if Nikon requires people to buy new glass to use their next iteration of digital pro bodies, I think there's a good chance they will discover that they are taking a real hit in terms of people defecting to Canon. Everyone else has already done it ( and yes, pissed off their existing lens customers.) But in the long run, it makes good marketing sense.. Nikon gets to sell the lenses all over again, in the new mounts... or maybe, with an adapter, this is not a problem. Depends on the design of the new mount. But the contrary is also true... that by using a smaller sensor, newly designed lenses can be made with less coverage, smaller, cheaper, and lighter. And that makes for happy customers AND you get to sell new lenses. Remember that the smaller sensor is also cheaper to build than a larger sensor. So there is a trade off.... My experience with Japanese companies is that they make decisions base upon some set of rules within their own company, not customer driven. SO from their internal perspective, making new lenses cheaper is the best solution. Pissing off old ( whho already own their lenses, and therefore would not buy UNLESS their old lenses would not work on the new bodies) customers is not vitally important. From a marketing perspective, expect a new lens mount. My not so humble opinion, based upon absolutely no facts, just my experiences.
