It is a big improvement on the software that comes with most scanners though. I have never tried plugins for GIMP because I havn't needed them. They are out there though. Like any good Image Manipulation program it is slightly complicated at first. There are GIMP mailing lists out there and tons of literature. Read the thrilling epic "Grokking the Gimp" if you want to get the most out of it. It is hard to kill though so you can just play round with it though and learn all you want. GIMP lets you set up keystrokes for your most common actions which can save time.
