I think you've very perceptively put your finger on something that's hard to
articulate with respect to images (IMHO Peter also touched upon it in a
different way). Allow me to quote Allan Bloom: "To overstate only a bit,
there are two writers who between them shape and set the limits to the minds
of educated Frenchmen. Every Frenchman is born, or at least early on
becomes, Cartesian or Pascalian." (from "The Closing of the American Mind".)
Perhaps HCB is a Cartesian and each of us reacts to his Cartesian way of
seeing?

PS I have been present during heated debates among my French colleagues (in
what used to be called a "high-tech" company) and have one of them say to
me, "he'll never understand; he's a Cartesian."
