I know you were putting on a brave face here Martin, only problem is, 
as I see it, R8/9 (in fact SLRs in general) are just not good for 
manual focussing (let alone autofocussing as you say) in dim light.  
And of course, that's where rangefinders come in.  I proved it at a 
wedding a few weeks back - I just couldn't focus my R8 inside a mainly 
candle lit reception room.  Switched to M6TTL - not the slightest 
problem; all shots were focussed just right.
