My suggestion with a choice between the above printers is to start by deciding what kind of inks you want to use and work your way backwards to the printer from that. The Espon 3000 has ink carts without a proprietary chip so that you can decide what brand of ink you want to use. I believe (someone help me here) that the other, newer Epsons use a proprietary cart. See if you can find examples of the various inksets to see what they look like.

I have the Epson 3000 which I use with Jon Cone's Peizography inks (the original Sundance formula, not the new and improved Peizotone inks . . .yet). (Cone used to send out sample prints . . . their URL is http://www.inkjetmall.com.) I have been very happy with the printer. You should know that the Cone inkset that I use does not work well with glossy-surface paper (pigment looks like it sits "on top" of the glossy surface). All my prints from the 3000 are on matte surface papers. It is nice to have something to supplement my traditional darkroom work -- you can definitely solve a different set of problems in digital than you can standing in a darkroom. There is at least one other list member who uses the 3000 and maybe she'll speak up regarding her experiences.

I originally bought the 3000 when, due to the birth of my daughter, I couldn't really get into the darkroom for months at a time. Now that she is a bit older, digital compliments the traditional processes, but doesn't really replace them. I still love the look of a silver print :)
