Walk in there with an unsheathed camera and you will get a leaflet thrust at you which explains that you are not allowed to photograph in the cathedral unless you buy a permit at 10GBP per day but _only_ if you can demonstrate that your images are for educational research. Photographers with permits must make every effort not to include staff or other visitors and under no account must images be made of children. You must apply for your permit in advance with proof of your academic status and some indication of the images of the cathedral interior and artefacts you require. You are allowed to photograph in the Cloisters only but must not include children in any image without permission. Commercial photography - that defined as anything other than educational - requires written permission and a fee - a big one. All photographers are recommended to approach the photographic library which has a large number of slides for sale in the first instance. (Why am I surprised?) The staff were quite discourteous in pointing out the Chapter of the cathedral's stance on photographers and also pointed out that they could withdraw their permission allowing me to take pictures in their precincts at any time. You distinctly got the impression they considered all photographers to be paedophiles. What a contrast with the staff in Rochester, Kent who were delighted I wanted to make images of their cathedral church and even encouraged me to take pictures of the choir during practice. No charge unless you wish to make a contribution.
