Let's look at cropping from another angle;
Some years ago an individual was arrested during student demonstrations at a
campus. Eyewitnesses, who later recanted their testimony, placed him at an
incident. The individual claimed he was on his way to classes, and not at
the location claimed.
Included in the evidence in this case was a newspaper photograph, cropped,
of the individual in question. He claimed he had books in the hand that was
cropped. The newspaper refused to release the uncropped version for his
defense, on the basis of freedom of the press.
While they, the newspaper and the DA, were going back and forth, the student
languished in jail. Ironically, he wouldn't accept a plea bargain that would
of let him out immediately, as he claimed he was completely innocent.
Finally, the newspaper, years later, relents causing the dropping of the
charges and the release of the individual.
I tried to find the case, under different searches, but it seems to have
dropped off the face of the earth. Interestingly enough it was front pages
news at the time.
