My guess is that the real reason they do that is because the cameras 
are easy to put away like that and unless they are actually seeing 
flare in the VF they can't be bothered to snap them on and off again.

The hoods on most of those L-series Canon lenses are massive. I find 
them a PITA when putting the camera in and out of the bag, for sure.
