Thanks to all who responded to my question both on and off the list.  I
figured I'd let you know that I decided to pick up a Sunpak 383
non-dedicated
flash.  It appears to be a pretty nice unit, comparable to the vivitar 283
that other suggested, but seems a bit more flexible, the price difference
between
the two was negligible.  Now, I need to get some practice in and hope that
all works out.

Most of the hotels that I have been in have conference rooms with
ceilings that range from 10 feet to 40 feet in height.  If you are doing
two person grip and grins then you can not get a successful bounce at
the correct distance with a normal lens, way too much eye socket shadow.
Then there is the issue of having an effective 20 foot range instead of
five feet for direct flash.

Really, for times when you have to produce an image with no possibility
for retake and the fear of the organizers mother, direct flash balance
close to ambient light level is by far the preferred method.  I say this
especially for someone who doesn't do flash.
