One historian pointed out that McClellan had indeed done a masterfull job of
training the Army of the Potomac. However, he never followed through on a
victory and didn't understand the nature of the war he was fighting. He also got
into politics, opposing Lincoln. Smart US generals run for office after they
won their wars. McClellan turned out to be a handsome, young, posturing blowhard
with a grandiose idea of his talents that impressed his wife, but few others.
