Methinks the viewer's eye should have someplace to go, even in a portrait. 
The sine qua non of photography -- IMHO -- is some notion of time and place. A 
serious portrait of a child. Lately we're getting child portraiture a la Kathe 
Kollwitz. LUG scores again.
