I can tell you that going from 3600 to 5000 dpi made a whole lot of
difference: that and greater gamma capability.  I suspect that you would
have to do the math on the RMS granularity of the film and compare it
with Nyquist to see the upper limit for a specific film.

I wonder what the upper limit of scanning
resolution is for 35mm films.  Clearly, it 
depends on the film, etc. etc., nonetheless
beyond a certain resolution you will have
extracted all the information on the film,
and after that, it's all noise, no ?
Is 5400 DPI approaching that limit ?
