Hi Simon,

While this does discuss how a histogram should look and how to use the Level
tool to make it look that way, it doesn't address the issue about where you
should be making that change.

Basically those tools apply some sort of transformation to the output of the
scanner.  I guess it's just an issue of where you want to "get close" - the
image that the scanner software writes to disk, or inside the image manipulation
program. I vote for Photoshop because it has a wide range of well designed tools
which use proven numerical methods to implement them. Maybe the scanner software
is as good - or maybe it's not.
