If you speak with the pro photographers who use the top end digital backs - the $12 - $25K backs - they'll universally agree that the software has every bit as much to do with image quality as the chip, cut-off filters and other hardware considerations.
At this point in time the PhaseOne alledgedly has the best software for handling 'raw' files, regardless of camera. In other words if you buy your Canon 10D, you're going to want to spend the additional $500 bucks for PhaseOne's software.
So let's not make light, or underestimate of the potential and expense of high quality image processing software, nor of post-processing/catalog software.
