I think what Mark, Eric, and others are debating is gradation. "Gradation
refers to the number of separate, recognizable image tones or shades of gray
in an image." (p.78, John B. williams, Image Clarity: High Resolution
Photography, Focal Press 1990). The author goes to some lengths (including
MTFs and information theory) to describe the trade-off between gradation and
contrast, i.e., tonal range and detail.
