"Gradation refers to the number of separate, recognizable image tones or shades of gray in an image." (p.78, John B. williams, Image Clarity: High Resolution Photography, Focal Press 1990). The author goes to some lengths (including MTFs and information theory) to describe the trade-off between gradation and contrast, i.e., tonal range and detail.
