In this context, RIP hardware/firmware/software converts vector based graphics (illustrator/CorelDraw) into bitmap versions. When you open an Illustrator document in Photoshop, and the software presents a dialogue box asking for DPI, colour profiles, RGB/CMYK etc, that process is in effect "RIPing" the file into a Raster, or bitmap, file format. Vector, or Postscript is device independent, and for the most part resolution independent. RIPs also translate various bitmap file formats into printer specific file descriptions for printing or imaging. A film or plate setter RIP will interpret TIFF or JPG files and translate that file information into a format the specific printer will understand. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Johnny Deadman" <lists@johnbrownlow.com> To: <leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us> Sent: Saturday, December 06, 2003 3:42 PM Subject: Re: [Leica] Software > RIP isn't a brand of software, a RIP is a particular kind of > application, like a word processor.
