Yes, as least for me, it has happened. Three years ago.

In the spring of 2001 my wife and I saw the exhibit: "Dual Visions of the
American West: Photographs by Macduff Everton and David Muensch" at the
Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

These were at least 25 medium and large format film images, hi-resolution
scanned and lightjet printed to at least 30" x 40" and they were
breathtaking. In one hour, I was convinced beyond all doubt, at least on the
scan and print side. Granted, Muensch used state-of-the-art digital
scan-and-print equipment probably costing >$100K, but in the intervening
three years desktop quality has come up and the price has come down to the
point that anyone with $5K to spend can acquire a hardware rig that can
produce exhibition quality 16" x 20" digital prints, assuming pristine
technique in the film capture.

Although I have and use a Nikon DSLR for some things, I love to shot film
and probably will not leave it behind totally, unless and until the Leica R
Digimodule or the M Digital becomes a viable reality.

Was film was just a crutch that allowed photographers to limp through the
20th Century until the invention of digital photography? I'm curious to see
if anyone will, with digital, match the work done by masters of the past.
Has it happened yet?
