Well, I can only say that the British have a long tradition of awarding
campaign ribbons to civilians operating in support of the troops. The UK
seems to regard journalists as a "positive" support for the troops and
their journalists, while much more inquisitve than their US equivalents,
generally leave off the spin in military coverage. That is, the British
journalists covering Imperial forces tend to tell the tale of the soldiers
without editorial input.

I can see awarding them campaign ribbons. This merely means that they were
there, not that they sold their souls to the devil.
