It is fairly obvious that they are adapting a film camera to digital. 
As such it makes more economic sense to change the function of existing 
controls to suit digital. It looks like a film camera because it was a 
film camera.

So it is not a nod to the photo snob, it is because they are cheap and 
practical. I hope this cheers you up.
