Sonny und Larry und Henning,

The obvious answer would be: "Don't collapse the lens".  Leitz
proposed, years ago, to put a strip of Dymo Labeling Tape
around the barrel of the lens, to limit or prevent collapse.  No
big problem if it is physical interference causing the difficulty.
