Natto - is a Japanese fermented whole bean eaten either with hot rice or made into a "maki" - it is another acquired taste. Raw egg white is usually added 

The Chinese rotten tofu - is a purposely deteriorated soya bean cake which develops a black skin when rotten - this is removed during cleaning leaving a whitish and dank smelling core ( the heart of the rot ) which is either steamed or fried.

For the record - I enjoy both items :-)
