i bought a small camera bag and leica lens on rec.photo.forsale about six
years ago and it arrived giving off such a pervasive odor of cigarette smoke
that i could smell it through the box. probably assisted by the cloth of the
camera bag and the padding inside it, the package positively reeked. i was
very suprised that the _lens_ had a strong odor of cigarette smoke as well.
several days (three or four) of sitting on the back porch fixed the lens,
but the bag held the smell for a considerably longer time. in the end, i
removed the inserts and ran them through the wash which helped, and dabbed a
little bit of "old spice" in the camera bag, which did not help.

later someone told me that a product called "fabrise" (sp?) is helpful for
removing the odor from things.

i've recently also noticed items such as books on ebay with the tag "kept in
a non smoking house!"
