I'm not sure that's a fair line to draw in assessing the images - we don't judge most B&W shots as being 'about the gray tones.' Color and tonality are one element of many, especially in something like this (that weren't fine-art or color abstracts). The faded, ancient look of the chromes is a benefit to them being about the color - it's a level of abstraction (as we don't see in that faded color palette) much like B&W.
