Hi Greg,

Why do you want to stay away from the R8/9, these are wonderfull cameras.

Really depends on your needs and budget.
If you want the brightest VF go for the Sl/sl2 or the R8/9.
If you want robustnes go for the the Sl/Sl2.
If you want cheap go for the R3.
If you want battery independence go for the Leicaflex,Sl/Sl2/R6.
If you like TTL flash, R8/9 is the best choice, but also the R5/E/6/7 
will do.
If you like compactnes it will be the r4/5/6/7/E

I wouldn't buy the Leicalfex because it has no TTL metering.
For me the R4 doesn't make much sense because it doesn't give me more 
than the R3 which is cheaper, but I only use aperture priority.

If you really want to stay away from the R8/9 I'd go for the 
Sl/Sl2/R6/R6-2 for manual or if you want electronics the R7.
