John, try the LaCie electron blue monitor. They are relatively cheap and
have very good tubes. I use one, which I calibrate with the SpyderPro
probe system and the setup is very accurate. I'm pretty sure that the
phosphors in the tube of your old Apple display are shot. When it comes
to color accurate work you only get about 3 years of use out of a good
monitor.
